Beyond Words Day 11

DAY 11
From the devotional book Beyond Words by Frederick Buechner

“AN AGNOSTIC IS SOMEBODY who doesn’t know for sure whether there really is a God. That is some people all of the time and all people some of the time.

There are some agnostics who don’t know simply because they’ve never taken pains to try to find out–like the bear who didn’t know what was on the other side of the mountain.

There are other agnostics who have taken many pains. They have climbed over the mountain, and what do you think they saw? Only the other side of the mountain. At least that was all they could be sure of. That faint glimmer on the far horizon could have been just Disneyland.”

my reflection There Buechner goes, being opaque again. He really makes you think and doesn’t leave many bread crumbs to lead the way. After puzzling over this cryptic entry for quite a while, I think I know what point he’s trying to make here. If one is looking for God, God can be really easy to miss. Many agnostics, not to mention any other seeker, could very easily miss God’s manifestation because they’re looking for some kind of solid proof of God’s existence. You’re not going to find it. That’s where, once again, faith comes into play. Faith, as I think I said in a previous missive, is belief in things not seen. God’s manifestations are way more often than not dismissed as mirages, coincidences, or just random happenings. It takes faith to see God at work in the universe. I’ve seen enough happenings in my life to have that faith.
